Think about how often you base a decision to buy upon a website or facebook page. You’re on holiday and need to choose a restaurant. You search and find several alternatives. From what you see, you decide which one you fancy and book a table. You need a plumber. You search and find several alternatives. From what you see, you decide which one you can rely on and make a call. You want to buy a gift on line. You search and find several alternatives. From what you see, you decide which one to buy and from whom. What are…
I’ve talked about the the main two types of marketing strategy – The billboard approach. Put yourself out there and hope to be remembered when somebody wants your offering The search approach. Be where people will look when they want what you’ve got. Both are valid methods and the choice should depend upon your offering and your target market. But just diving willy nilly into one or the other is almost certainly going to result in a waste of your marketing spend. I was in George recently and was struck by the inappropriateness of this advertisement – I mean,…
I must meet an average of one startup each day. This is what I tell them about cooking on gas. The interesting thing about the market place is that most potential customers or clients want to buy. Their problem is finding a company that they want to buy from (that’s why shopping can be such hard work). And then all suppliers want to sell. Their problem is finding the customers or clients that will buy from them. So the function of the market place is to bring these two together and satisfy both parties’ needs. On these lines Google’s stated…
Some time back I wrote a post called “Why your website doesn’t work“. But what if it does work? Ours has performed miracles for us since we had Jain’s team at Refract give it a complete new look and feel in 2014. But now we’ve decided to start all over again (still with Jain). Why? Simply because we want to do more business and nothing will change unless we change something! Jain’s team have cut our Adwords spend from R25 000 per month to less than R5 000 with more clicks than…
I was checking out a competitor’s website. On the home page was a special offer and below it >Click here<, so I clicked and nothing happened! It was not a link. More ads came up, still not a link from >Click here< So then I ran across the top tabs and found one that said “Order here”. I clicked on that and was presented with the usual form to fill in with all my details. After submitting that I was asked to “Please select a branch”. I selected Sandton, then the type of product that I was looking for. Now…
Where do people look when they want a plumber, a holiday, an auditor, a computer techie, a job etc.? It used to be the Yellow Pages (notice how they’ve shrunk lately?) Now it’s the internet, or more specifically, Google. So you need to be where they are going to look. First off you must have a website. This is no longer a luxury, it is an absolute necessity. There are two ways of going about this – 1) Learn how to build it yourself. I took just two one-day lessons on Joomla! and from there built our site (the other…
You’ll see earlier posts about “Sell them in bunches like bananas” and “The Power of Google Adwords“. Both are very relevant to your marketing approach, but the best I can do for you is an old quote that came in its original form from Albert Einstein – “It is a fool who keeps on doing the same thing expecting different results” This has been paraphrased into “If you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got!” I guess Einstein was good on ideas and a…
I’m afraid I can’t recall where I first read that expression. I was trying to learn about selling back in my engineering days and the words of wisdom popped up in an otherwise forgettable book (only forgettable because I was not ready to become any kind of a salesman until much later in life). Now take a look at our on-line store. You’ll see how I did eventually learn from that book. At the time of writing this we sell a company for R1 980, but look at the Additional Services. Those are the other bananas.
