The Covid gift
Sure, Covid has been a terrible pandemic. Devastating families and businesses. Smashing up an already smashed up economy. Changing the smiling faces and hugs that we South Africans are so used to into “Stay away from me”. Changing the property rental business probably forever. All very sad. But hey, there was at least some benefit.
In February 2020, before we’d really cottoned on to Covid, I resolved that by the end of the year, Helen and I would be “free to choose”. That meant free to choose everything, from how we lived to where we lived. Having already opted for home rental rather than ownership, we were already part way down the track. However, I realised that there was one major obstacle. Much of my time is spent holding free meetings with anybody who wants my advice, especially about trusts.
Because of this I was tied to the office. That’s when I decided to write my book on everything I know about property investment and trusts. The idea was that it would replace the meetings and I could tie up loose ends via emails and the telephone.
Then along came Covid, Zoom and Google Meet. Remote meetings became the norm. I gave up my office and meeting room in favour of extra classrooms for our school and started working permanently from home. The practice now houses all three of our staff in only one room of our building in Midrand and Gallagher Combined School has the rest.
So, thanks to Covid, we achieved our goal and are now completely free to choose. We’ll be moving in May!
