Our modified version of the game requires skill, luck and intuition. We have been playing a game almost daily for years and never tire of the challenge.

Shuffle the dominoes face down. Each player picks one and the higher one starts. If you both draw the same value, repeat.
The two exposed domioes are returned face down and the whole lot shuffled again.
The starter and then the opponent each draw 7 dominoes and the remaining 14 are pushed to one side. They are known as the boneyard.
The starter lays down a domino. If the dots add up to a multiple of 5 then that total is a score.
The players take turns to lay a domino, like for like against any exposed domino end.
If the total of all exposed ends is a multiple of 5, that’s a score.
Doubles are laid sideways and the total of their points is exposed so counts towards a possible score.
If a double is no longer exposed, it becomes a spinner and dominoes can be played off it in each direction.
If a player cannot go, she/he picks up from the boneyard until they can go.
If they have to pick up all the remaining boneyard and can still not go they have lost the hand.
Otherwise, when either player plays their last domino they have won the hand.
When a hand is lost, the total still in the loser’s hand is rounded (up or down) to the nearest multiple of 5 and that total is added to the winner’s score.
The winner of the game is the first to reach a score of 250.

We have a rule that if a player makes a score but doesn’t claim it, the other player can say “Muggins” and then the scorer cannot rectify the error. This often happens to me if I’m thinking strategy and not score when playing a domino.
There’s another situation that arises sometimes, and that is that a player picks up by mistake when they didn’t need to. You’ll have to make up your own rule on that one.

Here’s the start of a hand –
